American television channel Oxygen is set to modernize and Americanize Hong Kong television station TVB‘s award-winning hit drama last year, Curse of the Royal Harem.
The American version will be entitled All My Babies Mamas, and will feature Bankhead rapper Shawty Lo as the patriarch of a family consisting of 10 women in the figurative harem, all of them who have children by Shawty Lo. There are 11 children in total.
“Like the original [Curse of the Royal Harem]”, says the rapper father, “there will be plenty of drama. Baby mama drama.”
According to the show’s producer, the storyline will remain pretty much the same, except with modernized tweaks. In the original TVB drama, the women all fought for power and affection through intense schemes at any cost, and the modernized version will feature a similar fight for money and attention.
The new reality show also features traditional Manchurian names and titles of the Qing dynasty, including E’creia, with the title of “First Lady”. However, there will also be modern names such as Serena and Amanda, with titles like “The Shady Baby Mama” (named after her pro-scheming) and “Jealous Baby Mama” (self-explanatory), respectively. The characterization was done in a style similar to the Manchurian tradition of giving multiple titles to royal figures, such as Empress Dowager Cixi’s title of “Motherly and Auspicious”.
As for the Empress Dowager of this upcoming show, the rapper has no plans for including her yet.
“I don’t want my own mama involved in this show,” says Lo, “I ain’t no Lil Scrappy.”
The series is set to premiere in 2013.
